Social Media has become the new "big" thing in the world of business. It has become the primary way in which most business engages with customers online.
Social Media is the way of the future. It is how the world is starting to chose how to do business. As a business you have the opportunity to get onboard with this new technology before it is too late and you get lost in the noise of the fastest growing medium in business history. We are certainly not advocates of using only social media to promote your business, product or service. It is a tool, and a rather wonderful and powerful tool if used in the right way. For some businesses it is their primary portal to their online users, for others it is a great way to simply connect with customers. Whatever your business we feel it is vitally important to use social media such as Facebook and Twitter to it's fullest potential as well as investing into your own controllable website. You can easily control the content and the integrity of your own website, but you are limited in many ways to engage your existing and new users. Take a few moments to think about the power of social media. Nearly everyone uses it. It spans the internet in a truly global way, transcending borders, language and social diversity. It is the power of the internet harnessed into a vibrant communications platform.
If you are observant you may have noticed during 2011 most of the large corporations that advertise on the television networks switched from promoting their own websites as the place to seek more information. As the credits and the "call to action" commences at the end of their TV message, instead of displaying their own website most turned to promoting their Facebook page instead. This is a profound step. It means a more instant engagement with their market on a platform that they are already comfortable with, and a deeper conversation penetration. If the user is motivated enough to "like" the page the conversation continues to occur, with the ability now present to continue to communicate with them via their Facebook feed. The new user is instantly engaged and emotionally invested in your brand, more so than by making a random, one time visit to your website.
Harnessing the power of social media. Use the right tool for the job.
Social Media is a powerful tool in the communications toolbox, but it is one that is easily overlooked, or used incorrectly.
It is not the same thing as your personal profile.
It is an extension of your business. It represents your business in a virtual way in the world's biggest marketplace. It is another employee, another salesperson on the shop floor, another travelling sales rep or another tech consultant on the end of the phone. You would not employee a random off the street to fill these positions. You would make sure that the person you employ can do the job. After all whatever they say is essentially said on behalf of your business. Mess it up and you risk serious damage to your brand.
There are definite tricks and techniques to getting your posts in peoples feeds, and in their minds at the right time. It is a fine line between engaging with your users and bombarding them with irrelevant posts - to much of that and you will see your engaged users dropping off as they become bored with being "pestered".
You must also know your customers and their online habits. When are the highest amount of your customers online and what activities are they engaging in? Are they online at work or during their downtime?
As discussed in the above video, maximising your online social media is a job for professionals. It is not something that you allocate to someone who "is good on Facebook" because they post heaps of photos of their kids or cats.
