Monday Movie Review - Killers

Killers vs The Bounty Hunter - who wins this RomCom Battle.

In the weekend we watched a couple of movies of the same type - the romantic spy / cop RomCom. Haylee loves this kind of movie, me not so much so it is always tricky choosing so that she is entertained and I don't fall asleep.

As much as one can when you find these kind of movies a bit dreary, I had been kind of looking forward to seeing Killers and I had been very impressed with the way Ashton Kutcher's company Katalyst had gone about marketing this movie through the new media networks such as Twitter and Facebook.

They approached the marketing of this film in quite a new way, employing almost guerrilla marketing techniques.
At one stage in the lead up to the cinematic release Ashton was running a promotion on his social media to engage with him personally to play the Killers Game and win access to all 8 million of his followers.
For anyone spendng some time in social media quite a while back, Ashton was for a while the overlord of this new genre, and gaining access to all of his followers would have been quite a coup. He had more followers than some countries, with most of them quite engaged with what he had to say. Unfortunately the winner really under utilised the prize to reach out and touch 8 million people and just directed them to a disposable youtube ego piece of themselves being silly.

So the movie - RomCom superhero's Ashton Kutcher and Katherine Heigl star in this predictable comedy about a super secret agent played by Kutcher who falls in love with a normal girl, Heigl, who is in Nice on holiday with her family. Her Dad is played superbly by Tom Selleck, who as noted in the film has a fantastic moustache.
If the clip is slow to load due to your connection, just change the settings from 720 HD down to 480 or 360.

Compare this film to the Jennfier Aniston RomCom Bounty Hunter is a hard task. How can one say one is better than the other when both are quite predictable bubble gum movies? I guess during one I predictably fell asleep, and during the other I did not. Is that a way to rate movies?

The overall comparison between the movies can be summed up by how the studios have decided to apply the treatment to their official youtube clips. I took both from the official studio channels. The Killers still shot used for the screenshot when the youtube clip has loaded but is not playing really focuses on the stars and how beautiful they both are, whereas the Bounty Hunter one is very soft focus with the stars in the background. Great summary.

Killers was very watchable, both Kutcher and Heigl are very beautiful people with an ease about them that makes watching them quite easy. It is entirely predictable that the producers pick up on this and structure the movie about showcasing the stars and their personalities over most everything else about the movie.
The plot is quite thin, and the action scenes are ok but these are not things you really look for when selecting movies such as these.
Our rating 3 out of 5
(for this genre, not as an overall rating.....)

The Bounty Hunter on the other hand is devoid of the sexiness of The Killers.
Jennifer Aniston just doesn't have the residual hotness that Heigl does and her girl next door charm is getting confused as she ages. The film has a bit more of a realistic plot but is a little dreary - I feel asleep part way through and have not had the energy to watch the last third again. This makes rating the film awkward as I only saw the first two thirds but I can imagine quite clearly what happened......

Our rating 2 out of 5 (for this genre, not as an overall rating.....)
