Take a walk on the wild side of The Road

Movie Review: The Road
Our Rating: **** (4.5 Stars)

We watched this several months ago, and I have been itching to write a review ever since.

It was with much anticipation that I came home with this one Saturday night, very keen to see what looked so promising on the following trailer.

I can just hear Haylee in the background right now - not another apocalyptic end of the world movie!!!!
Well yes it is, but for a change it is very intense, a bit vague and full of mystery, and beautifully crafted with limited visual effects.

Viggo Mortensen does a stunning job of portraying a man hell bent on improving the hopelessness of his situation, and in turn protect his family from the effects of a planetary catastrophe that leaves most things dead. His character is full of a haunting sorrow and pain, Viggo does an atsounding job of painting a bleak emotional picture of what this kind of future must just feel like.

Based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning 2006 novel of the same name by American author Cormac McCarthy, this movie is at times very dark. The concept that a single event could reduce humanity to such a state is mind boggling, but ever present given what goes on in this crazy world.

Without giving too much away this is one of those movies that you have to watch to appreciate.

Thoroughly recommend it, but not if you are after an easy and relaxing experience. It is much more sobering than that, and may stick with you for a few days.
I found it frustrating in that the central character seems to do the silliest of things over and over again that contravene all of the basic tenants of achieving a state of survival behind enemy lines from a soldiers point of view. But I guess this is also part of the point. He is not a warrior, a ruthless killer or even a petty thug, he is just a normal guy in far from normal circumstances. He is clearly out of his depth, and living in constant fear and paranoia.

Here is a synopsis that wont destroy it for you or spoil the plot:

The year is 2019, just ten years from now. A catastrophe has befallen the planet. A father and his son walk alone through burned America.
Nothing moves in the ravaged landscape save the ash on the wind. It is cold enough to crack stones, and, when the snow falls it is gray. The sky is dark.
Their destination is the coast, although they don't know what, if anything, awaits them there.
They have nothing: just a pistol to defend themselves against the lawless bands that stalk the road, the clothes they are wearing, a cart of scavenged food - and each other.
