It really is a PR nightmare for them right now. They are getting spanked by everyone, but at the end of the day what they have to do to fix this is quite a task. At 5,000 feet they are dealing with some fairly extreme parameters, not withstanding the big one, huge volumes of oil gushing from the busted well at huge pressure.

They need to be seen to be doing something, so that is what they have done. The BP site in itself is quite an example of PR Crisis Management, with sections dedicated to debunking what the mainstream media is reporting. They could do with learning a thing or two off the BPGlobalPR twitter account though. BP Terry it seems is doing a far better job of managing the PR Crisis than BP is.
