Some of the early ones where pretty hilarious, but then they became way too popular and everyone else started posting them all over facebook and it started to look like I was just following the herd, rather than exposing everyone to some brilliance I had just stumbled upon whilst researching existentialism and the philosophies of the early raw vegans. It was pretty ironic. See what I did there - I was just being a hipster. I am so much cooler than you. But only because I don't care. Oh, and only because I am truly authentic. Damn those hipsters, and their easy to mock social ideals. The whole Occupy Movement has seen the mainstream rise of the hipster as an "Official" subgroup, with random hipsters getting airtime for their thoughts on what it is to be the 99%. Some have been hilarious, some have been insightful, and some have been comedic. Like the hipster talking about the evil 1% and how they were ruining the world, that actually turned out to be a massive trustafarian that was also a fame whore and had appeared in other TV pieces talking about his wealth and lifestyle. Those dirty gen-rightnow "hipsters" are the modern day era beatnik / hippes / genX slackers / 80's stoner / 90's emo all rolled into one big mess of influence and lack of direction. And the shit they say. Man it is sooooooo ironic.
Sometimes the ads for mainstream seem way off base - you have to think to yourself, who are they actually going for with this ad? The youth market? Or their parents who are snickering behind their backs at the joke made about their cooler than thou lifestyle? Whilst scanning for some material to post onto the Bowater Motor Group Facebook page I came across this ad, which reminded me of a funny video I saw a while back, Forts & the InBetween < http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/596792432/forts-and-the-inbetween >, which was a hipster plea for money so that 4 hipsters could get a grant of $25K to buy a van and travel from A-B teaching people how to empower themselves through the building of blanket forts. It ws hilarious, but they got so much flak for it the video disappeared as did their campaign. The website is still there though, and so is the video plea on the KickStarter site - and it was by all accounts serious. Which is pretty funny. So here is the group and their video. Remember this is serious.
and the ad that motivated this whole rant ..... So how many hipsters can you fit into their own car? The correct answer is none of course. They are to concerned about the negative carbon points and the image it portrays to their hipster mates that they will never own a car. Until someone gives them one, and it looks cool. And it has an MP3 plug , bluetooth or a port for their iphone. Just what is it to be the right kind of hipster?
Some of the shit hipsters say is pretty right on the money. Some if it is not.
Of course you can't go past a mainstream take on the hipster movement.... the hipster olympics is pretty funny, but surprisingly after watching so many counter culture hipster things, is actually right on the money! So - are hipsters really that cool, or just another version of the same old youth rebellion that every generation of educated, privileged kids go through? |
