Friday's Heartstopping Music FHM: Sarah Brightman & Hot Gossip "I lost my heart to a starship trooper"
This is totally 1978, but somehow also from the future at the same time. This is pure disco.
A time when everything was so much simpler. A time when the future looked so bright. A time when entertainment was an artform, and expectations were high that in the future we would live in a world full of modern conveniences, peace love and harmony.
You may cringe. You may even laugh a little. But we will guarantee that this tune will stay with you over the next couple of days, coming back into mind when you least expect it. So sit back and watch this, and then go looking for your glitter gun, your bedazzler and some shiny material. With just the right amount of smoke machine action you could easily make you own version and get another bite of this sweet, sweet pie.
Inspired? We are. This song has so much going for it. We had to go deeper and find out more.
Where to start? For those not old enough to remember this time it was all about the glamour. In one corner you had the youth rebelling against the system with their loud and crash punk music. In the other corner you had the youth celebrating the new found freedom, drugs, technology and interconnectedness with Glam Rock & Disco.
Glam rock and disco is a pretty weird time. The more you start looking at it the more freaky it becomes. This video is from the Kenny Everett Video Show, a show that was quite cutting edge withlst still being reasonably mainstream - after all it was shown on British TV in the 70's, and also by default in the colonial countries like New Zealand and Australia as well. Not the most liberal of TV platforms at the time!
The show featured "naughty bits" often with video from the Hot Gossip dance troupe, featuring a very young Sarah Brightman, who later went on to become quite a famous singer in her own right. In 1978, during their initial impact period on The Kenny Everett Show, Hot Gossip made their only hit record, this one, "I Lost My Heart to a Starship Trooper". It cashed in on the media hype surrounding the original Star Wars film. As a result of the track reaching number 6 in the British music chart, they went on to record an album in the early 1980s, Geisha Boys and Temple Girls, produced by the former Human League and then current Heaven 17/BEF member Martyn Ware. The album was a commercial failure. But let's not get too deep into this culture, we will save that for another time because there is so much to learn about the application of marketing to an entertainment industry in a state of massive change.
The more you go digging for information and something a little different to share the more you find. Check this out, a modern Doff Doff version of the song. It is not surprising that it meshes so well. Handbag House from the early 90's anyone?
