Wednesday's Weird Web Thievery: Fashion is not what it used to be.

This week I am revisiting some truly horrendous fashionista's from the past after receiving a random email with these pictures embedded.

It is not so long ago that the world was a very different place, and dressing like Lady Gaga was quite the norm for the fashion forward. The future looked bright, and fashion had a very strong opinion on what the future needed to look like. Think Space 1999, Logan's Run and even vintage Star Trek.

The fashion industry of the 1960's and 1970's was in some aspects very much entwined with popular culture, seemingly even more so than today. There was a clear connection between trends, the cutting edge of clothing, automotive design and even interior design. It all seemed to roll into the iconic imagery used in the movies of the time about the future. A future that was full of the wonders of the technology just being realised.
In some ways this romantic view of an Utopian future is reflected in this futuristic look, and with the bringing back of the cool, tough, rugged, and perfectly socially acceptable "hipster" beard, is this kind of look next on the list?
Could today's modern man really pull this off as well as this cool-cat? Could today's hipster handle this dudes pose!
What is up with his clenched fists? The sunglasses in the belt is pretty cool though.

The question is though, would we want to bring this kind of sexy back? It seems like quite a lot of pressure, even in today's body-perfect world.
So what was expected of the "modern man" of that era? Quite a lot.

I have to be honest, growing up in the 1970's in provincial New Zealand this kind of look was not often seen on the streets of Gisborne. Bit of a shame really - the jumpsuit has all of the cool factor that today's "active leisure clothes" do not.
