Wednesday's Weird Web Thievery: Japan Earthquake Images

jp-eq-graphToday's weird web thievery is a showcase of the most dramatic images I could find of the recent magnitude 9 earthquake and subsequent tsunami that hit Japan on the 11th of March.

Over the week the footage that came out was unbelievable. Working on the website www.tussockjumper.com I have had the fortune (or misfortune) to watch what must have collectively been hours  of youtube footage of the action as it has come to hand. This has given me a comprehensive perspective of what it must have been like to live vicariously through this deeply traumatising experience.

It has also motivated me to look deeper into my own personal earthquake exposure risk here in Nelson, which is graphically illustrated at the end, and is quite soothing.

Click on the images to enlarge them. These images are thieved from the internets, we do not have copyright over them, so be careful downloading and posting them, and please do not credit them to us.

Houses are in flame while the Natori river is flooded over the surrounding area by tsunami tidal waves in Natori city, Miyagi Prefecture, northern Japan.

With all of this trauma it got me thinking about our little place in this world. How at risk are we in Nelson from a massive earthquake?
A quick visit to GNS and GeoNet websites put alot of my fears to rest. Nelson is well out of the picture when it comes to earthquakes. Lucky us.
The image below shows recent deep earthquakes, and you can clearly see the earthquake action along the tectonic plate boundary, with the majority of the action occurring on the eastern side of the Pacific Plate.

The next image shows the more damage causing, shallow earthquakes.
Nelson is not featured in the graph.
