At just 9 years old, Willow Smith, daughter of A-List actors and musicians Will Smith and Jada Pinkett-Smith, is exploding onto the scene with her own career. 9 years old! Serious. She is even talking about her "career" in interviews. Here is a clip from her first TV performance, on the Ellen show last week. Watch this and think of the 9 year old girls that you know. This kid is in it for the big time now. It seems that they have this whole thing mapped out. It is quite a brilliant marketing move. Here is the interview from the Ellen show performance. It is very enlightening. In a lot of ways she is just a 9 year old kid, but in other ways she seems that she is a product, with what appear to be carefully rehearsed lines. The Smith family have perhaps thought long and hard about all of this. They have both come from highly successful careers in many different forms of the media profession so have intimate knowledge of how it all works, not too mention the heavy hitting connections and Hollywood muscle. Not only have they carved out a remarkably career path for their child, but they have also created a new movement for that generation of kids in America. At one point Willow even says, "basically it is like the new, I am me!" like she is creating a new political movement. Here is a great interview with both Willow and Jada about the making of Madagascar, which shows a great side to both of them - and shows the strong parenting style of the Smith family.
The Marketing behind the Celebrity. The state of celebrity our culture finds itself in right now is quite without compare. We have an entire generation addicted to being famous, and celebrities out there now that are famous for just being famous. Andy Warhol once famously said that in the future we would all be famous for fifteen minutes. Thanks to the internet we all have this ability in one way or another, whether we like it or not, but it seems that for some it is a lifestyle choice. Let us hope that the young Willow Smith has the right guidance and mentoring on this path. With parents like hers though one would assume she is well equipped to handle such a strange lifestyle. Here is an interview with Ryan Seacrest.
